The Son of David

Identifies: His IDENTITY

A chain tracing the Messiah's identity as the ultimate King from David's dynasty. What makes this chain remarkable is a paradox: the Messiah is David's son (a human descendant) and yet also David's Lord (a figure greater than David). The title 'Son of Man' implies divinity, coming from Daniel 7:13, while 'Son of God' points to Jesus as the unique Messianic king.

Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will dwell in hope, because You will not abandon my soul to Hades, nor will You let Your Holy One see decay. You have made known to me the paths of life; You will fill me with joy in Your presence.’

Brothers, I can tell you with confidence that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that He would place one of his descendants on his throne. Foreseeing this, David spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that He was not abandoned to Hades, nor did His body see decay. God has raised this Jesus to life, to which we are all witnesses.

Exalted, then, to the right hand of God, He has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear. For David did not ascend into heaven, but he himself says: ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”’

Today in the city of David a Savior has been born to you. He is Christ the Lord!

John 1:1-14

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made, and without Him nothing was made that has been made. In Him was life, and that life was the light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

There came a man who was sent from God. His name was John. He came as a witness to testify about the Light, so that through him everyone might believe. He himself was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light.

The true Light who gives light to every man was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through Him, the world did not recognize Him. He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. But to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God— children born not of blood, nor of the desire or will of man, but born of God.

The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Triumphal entry on a donkey

Your king comes, humble and riding on a donkey

Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your King comes to you, righteous and victorious, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

Zechariah 9:9 (BSB)

Fulfilled in the New Testament

Matthew 21:1-11

As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent out two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt beside her. Untie them and bring them to Me. If anyone questions you, tell him that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.”

This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:

“Say to the Daughter of Zion, ‘See, your King comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’”

So the disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and laid their cloaks on them, and Jesus sat on them.

A massive crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.

The crowds that went ahead of Him and those that followed were shouting: “Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest!”

When Jesus had entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?”

The crowds replied, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.”

John 12:12-16

The next day the great crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. They took palm branches and went out to meet Him, shouting: “Hosanna!” “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the King of Israel!”

Finding a young donkey, Jesus sat on it, as it is written:

“Do not be afraid, O Daughter of Zion. See, your King is coming, seated on the colt of a donkey.”

At first His disciples did not understand these things, but after Jesus was glorified they remembered what had been done to Him, and they realized that these very things had also been written about Him.

The Cumulative Portrait

The Messiah is from the tribe of Judah and the family of David, born in Bethlehem. A King with an everlasting throne, greater than David himself, David calls him 'Lord.' Both human descendant and pre-existent/divine. Coming first in humility on a donkey, later in universal dominion in the clouds. Addressed with divine titles: 'God' in Psalm 45, 'The LORD our Righteousness' in Jeremiah 23.

New Testament Fulfillment

Matthew and Luke both provide genealogies tracing Jesus to David. Jesus was born in Bethlehem, entered Jerusalem on a donkey, and affirmed being the 'Son of Man' from Daniel 7 before the Sanhedrin. The NT repeatedly calls him 'Son of David.' The early church proclaimed him as heir of David's throne, and Isaiah 9:6-7's exalted names found their fulfillment in the one born in a Bethlehem stable.
